Twelve lead shift - On QHS moving day
The 1959 leaving certificate class at Queanbeyan High School numbered just 12 and they led the way carrying furniture from Isabella Street to the new home at the top of Surveyor Street.
The trip down Lowe Street, through the Park and up the hill to the school will be re-enacted at the schools golden anniversary celebrations during the October long weekend.
Whether the school captains at the time, Dennis Rowley and Ilze Kalnins, are still able to carry a desk may be doubtful but they will be attending along with the eight other surviving members of the class.
The names belong to well known Queanbeyan families: Anita McIntyre (nee Pola), Joy Lacheta (Monck),Dorothy Hall, Ted Royal, Peter Spendelove, John Mc Namara, Russell Wenholz and Arthur Shacklock. Les Manwaring and Eric Borman are deceased.
Dr. Arthur Shacklock and Anita McIntyre are co-ordinating the 1959 class attendance. Shacklock is at the Department of Management at the Griffith Business School in Queensland and Mrs. McIntyre is well known for her involvement in the arts and is the wife of Raiders guru John.
The Queanbeyan Age reported school principal, Mr Les Wenholz, as saying High school teachers and pupils have been busy yesterday and today moving from the old school in Isabella Street to the spacious new modern premises in Surveyor Street and Agnes Avenue.
Just to add to the students work load it rained and many of the cardboard boxes packed with materials fell apart
The main anniversary function will be the reunion dinner on Saturday October 3 at the Bicentennial Hall. Memorabilia will be on display with past students, admin staff and teachers able to mix with their peers and share their stories.
Past students and staff can register their interest and receive regular updates by contacting qhs50@bigpond.com.
